Now, I respect all creatures. Everyone knows that. But, I have been way lenient with our squirrels this year. Shall I name all the transgressions this squirrel has comitted this summer? #1: Digging in my garden to plant peanuts. The disturbed soil (often around a seedling of some sort) and the resulting peanut plant. Using up my resources. #2: Killingof basil seedlings. I had enough trouble with germination, only to find healthy seedlings cut of at the stem. I have my suspicions. #3: Owen's avocado plant. The teeth marks on the woody stem were very obvious to me. #4: Tasting of various peppers and tomatoes. Okay, maybe not the squirrel, but come on. #5: Of the very few squash I got, they ALL had teeth marks on them. I am very serious. Green zucchini as well as yellow squash. #6: Digging up my onions. I would find them totally uprooted and laying on top of the soil. Almost every single one. Not to mention all of the spring flower bulbs they have dug up in the past years. #7: Every morning my compost bin lid is off, or open. Okay, this could be the racoons. #8: THE ONLY PUMPKIN TO FRUIT THIS YEAR. The kids were so proud to finally have one. They had big plans for it, not for Halloween, but for Thanksgiving. The kids have not seen this yet.
I made a "final" harvest again today. There will be hard freezes for the next few nights. I can't expect my tomatoes to survive that. (But for fun, I will cover two plants that are very close together with a double layer of sheets, see if they survive, since it will warm up again at the end of the week!) SO I have the biggest bowl of green tomatoes, I was reading up on making green tomato chutney or jam. Anyone want to come over and help me make green tomato chutney or jam? You can have a lot to take home!?!

I could go for some green tomato chutney! I fried up a few green ones the other night. Like you, I've covered my tomatoes hoping for the best, but that prediction of 22 degrees doesn't look too good.
