Homemade Butter

Today we made homemade butter.

I was inspired by this blog. First, you put heavy cream into a jar with a few marbles, close it up and SHAKE. And shake, and shake and shake. After a short bit, you get whipped cream, keep going - eventually the cream will separate into yellow butter and buttermilk.

Here I am filtering the buttermilk of milk solids.

Next you rinse your butter with cold water. I put some water in the jar after removing the buttermilk for the first rinse, pour off. Then place the butter on a board and spread with a spatula, can rinse with more water at this point. Spread around to remove all liquid from your butter.

Here is Elise's batch:

And here is Owen's added in for the finished product:

We're having chili and cornbread tonight, with lots of fresh butter.

We did that just a couple of weeks ago with a Little House on the Prairie Bookclub the kids are a part of - they used smaller containers (like those little gladware containers), and I was surprised that they had butter in about 7 minutes of shaking. The kids loved it. Yum! :-)
