Homemade vs Mindless Stuff?

Warning: Rant ahead. Avoid if you might be offended by my random rantings!

Valentine's Day Parties at school. They are fun, a way to share with friends, show them you appreciate them, etc. I remember making valentines for school and relatives (***see note below - sorry!), the creativity, messiness, fun.
Elise had her class Valentine's Party today, and we just got done opening all of her Valentines. I appreciate the gifts included in most (all, except for ours?) of the valentines, and even the thought of the candy. But really, when did this become a day just to give candy to friends? There were only 2 other homemade valentine's in Elise's bag. And now I feel "bad" for not including a gift with her valentines!
And most of the cards were based on characters, I won't even go there.
I know, the character-based store bought mass produced cards were around already when I was in school. And I have let Owen give out store bought cards, when they were about something he really cared about (can you say Harry Potter?).
Is it all about the party? Or the candy?
Sigh.

PS We haven't even finished with our Halloween candy!!!!!!

***Note to relatives: We didn't get our family valentines done this year due to illnesses, so we'll send them out next week, or this weekend. We are still thinking about you, though!

I'm so with you on this. Sophie's teacher requested that they make valentines from recycled materials. Sophie was hugely upset at not getting to go out and buy the commercial ones, but eventually got into it. She folded origami cups and put a note inside (her teacher also asked that they write something nice about each student in their valentine). The hardest part will be tomorrow, when she discovers that at least half the class didn't follow the teacher's request and come in with candy and store-bought cards. Ugh!

Ya, Owen's class was the same way. Owen's valentines were very unique- he wrote some corny sayingon each one, things like "don't change", etc. SO cute. And witha little drawing in each one. I guess ours were made from recycled materials - the papers left over from an art start project.
And the candy attached to each valentine - when did this happen? I totally missed it. And of course we can't even get the good candy - like reese's cups - due to peanut allergies. Sigh.
