Memorial Day Camping 2011 - Golden Gate

We set off on this camping trip not with dread, but with resignation. Given the weather forecast, and our past Memorial Day experiences, we fully planned to be sitting in tents watching the rain, or even snow. A cold first night not withstanding,we were pleasantly surprised.

First night's dinner and campfire:

We stayed in a different part of Golden Gate Canyon State Park this year - Aspen Meadows. Our campsites were beautiful, and close to some nice hiking areas.

Here the kids are preparing for their first "survival hike" where they went off without parents into the wilderness, off trail (just the area around our camp). They had a blast.

Day 2, and a trip to Dude's Fishing Hole. This pond was recently stocked, so the kids were extremely successful.

Elise and Marcos climed WAY up high to some rocks. (My camera is on high zoom!)

Back at camp with a warming campfire.
Owen found a "boutonniere" on his fishing trip that totally matched his sweater:

Starting up a rousing game of telephone!

Owen telling what he heard.

Must have been a good one!

Dinner night 2:

Hike on Day 3 - the weather was Beautiful!
Snowball fight!

Lunch at a backcountry shelter:

Snow swirly!

Yes, this is how we treat other's children when we are supposedly taking care of them:

Self-imposed swirlies:

Campfire Night 3:

The Claw, continued....
